Avoiding Motion Sickness
Our Aunt Helga loved to go out fishing with her husband, but she had a weak tummy. Over the years, she learned a lot of little secrets that helped her have fun every time she went out. We can't make any promises, but customers tell us that Aunt Helga's suggestions have helped them a lot. We're presenting them here with the hope that you might find them useful.
Don't drink alcohol the night before. Or, if you do go out, don't have more than a couple.
Get to bed early. You have to get up early, so try to hit the sack by 10 p.m at the latest. Set your alarm to get up 1-1/2 hours before your boat's departure time.
Take your Drammamine. Take your first Drammamine (or other motion-sickness medicine) just before you go to bed. It starts setting your system up for stability. When you wake up, take your second one. Then take one every five to six hours. So if you get up at 4:30 a.m. for a fishing trip, take your second one at 9:30 a.m. or so.
Eat a simple breakfast. Eat simple, plain food, like cereal, milk, coffee, and toast. Ignore the old salts who suggest greasy bacon and eggs, or it will come back to haunt you.
Bring plenty to drink. Bring at least a quart of water, along with "quiet" soft drinks like 7-Up.
Dress warmly; stay outside. Dress warmly in layers so you can easily adjust to the weather. Except in the most severe weather conditions, stay out of the cabin. Sit outside in the fresh air, where you get the ocean breeze on your face.
Watch the horizon. During the ride out, pick a boat or buoy or some other point out at the horizon, and watch that rather than watching the boat or the water around the boat. Also during the ride out, take a couple of tablets of antacid and chew a piece of gum.
Eat the right food. You can pack your own lunch, or pick up a sack lunch the morning of your trip at any one of several places: at Castaways, at King's, or at the Inn of the Westwind. As with everything else, make sure you leave plenty of time in the morning to take care of this. Also consider bringing saltines and other simple munchies.
All items mentioned, such as Drammamine, Tums, and cinnamon gum are available in our office in case you forget them or don't have time to pick them up.
If you have any other questions, please call. --- Thank you & have fun!
